The Assertive Leader | Edition #15

This is an average one-minute read to get you into the "Leapers mindset."

Welcome to this week’s edition, where we explore the powerful trait of being “Assertive.”

An assertive leader communicates their needs, desires, and opinions clearly and respectfully without undermining others.

Here's a story:

In the middle of a crucial project at a Telecom company I was working for, differing opinions led to a deadlock, stalling progress, and one of the executives wanted to impose their own agenda. Recognizing what was happening, I met with the executive stalling the project and gained support. I led another meeting with the team members, where they could openly voice their concerns and suggestions. This approach led the team to remain focused on our common goal, enabling the project's completion.

Here's why assertiveness is vital:

1)    Clear Communication: Assertive leaders articulate their thoughts clearly, eliminating misunderstandings to create a culture of transparency.

2)    Respectful Engagement: Assertive leaders respect their own boundaries and those of others, creating a healthy and productive work environment.

3)    Decisive Action: Assertive leaders are decisive. They gather input, weigh options, and make clear, informed decisions, driving their teams forward confidently and clearly.

Assertiveness in leadership is not about imposing your will; it's about creating an environment where clear, respectful communication leads to decisive action and collective success.
